Where is the Sacramento Trail located?
The Sacramento is a popular coastal walk through the Schoenmakerskop-Sardinia Bay Nature Reserve that starts in the coastal village of Schoenmakerskop in Gqeberha (PE). Explore this 5.6-km loop trail near Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 1 h 11 min to complete. This is a popular trail for hiking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.
The Sacramento Trail is a circular route between Schoenmakerskop and Sardinia Bay. The trail traverses the Sardinia Bay Nature Reserve where you will see attractive seascapes, landscapes, and depending on the season, some remarkable displays of wild flowers. Gannets and dolphins can often be seen out at sea. Many wrecked ships, one the Portuguese galleon Sacramento, lie offshore and there is a bronze cannon from the ship on display at Schoenmakerskop. Horses are permitted on the trail.
At Schoenmakerskop, a bronze cannon points towards the wreck site of the Portuguese galleon, Sacramento, which foundered on 30 June 1647.
