Where to stay in Gqeberha: an area-by-area guide

The Beach Hotel, Boardwalk, No5, Wilmot Cottages, Paxton and Hacklewood: named stays, why I would compare them, and a family getaway from my own archive.

No5 for art; Hacklewood for Walmer gardens

If this is your first visit to the Bay, I would start with Summerstrand. You can build a day around the beachfront, eat nearby and leave the longer drives for Addo or the coast. But I would choose a different base for a quiet Walmer weekend, a family needing a kitchenette, or a holiday that is really about the bush.

Here is a named shortlist, with a reason to choose each place. The hotel comparisons use current information from the properties; they are not claims that I have slept in every room. There is one personal stay further down: Once Upon a Dome, which I wrote about after visiting with my family.

The short version: match the stay to the trip

The Beach Hotel: put the beachfront at the centre

The Beach Hotel on Marine Drive is the first place on this list I would compare for a straightforward beachfront holiday. The attraction is the combination of location and on-site dining: The Verandah, The Crest and Ginger give you options without another drive.

The detail I would settle before paying is the room outlook. The hotel has both sea-facing and courtyard-facing rooms. If waking up to the ocean is the reason for your booking, select that room category explicitly rather than relying on the property's main photograph.

Check The Beach Hotel directly. Pair this base with Hobie Beach, Shark Rock Pier and the promenade in the beach guide.

Boardwalk Hotel: for a family that wants options close by

Sun International's Boardwalk Hotel puts pools, restaurants and the wider Boardwalk entertainment precinct together. That makes it a useful comparison for a family whose days need a few different gears: beach time, a meal, an indoor activity and a return to the room.

Look at the actual family-room occupancy, children's ages and breakfast inclusions. The owner's pages describe room views differently, so ask for the outlook you want. Also check the property name on the booking: this is Sun International's Boardwalk Hotel, distinct from The Capital Boardwalk.

See the Boardwalk Hotel's rooms and reservations. Its convenience is the reason it is here; it is not a promise that every activity or meal in the precinct is included.

No5 by Mantis: for art and a more individual room

No5 Boutique Art Hotel by Mantis is at 5 Brighton Drive in Summerstrand. Its restored Art Deco setting, art collection and suites make it the more interesting comparison when the hotel itself is part of the holiday.

Suite layouts differ. A separate lounge, an upstairs balcony or a private garden changes how you use the space, especially with another person working, resting or keeping different hours. Choose the layout rather than assuming the most expensive name answers every need. Ask about steps and access if those affect your stay.

Explore No5 through Mantis. It is a Summerstrand base near the coast, rather than a room opening straight onto the sand.

Wilmot Cottages: for a smaller self-catering stay

We first featured Wilmot Cottages in 2023. At 13 Bradley Road, the owners offer just two garden units: The Cottage and the Pool Room. Both have kitchenettes, with access to the garden and pool.

This is the option I would compare when a fridge, simple meals and a little independence matter more than a hotel lobby. The Cottage's sleeping arrangement includes beds in the living area, so look at the layout before choosing for a family. Ask the hosts about your dates, the pool and any pets travelling with you; two units also means limited availability.

Read our original Wilmot Cottages feature, then use the owners' current site for today's arrangements. The old feature's broad travel-time claims are not the basis for this shortlist.

The Paxton: for harbour views rather than Hobie Beach

The Paxton Hotel is in Carnarvon Place, Humerail. Its harbour and Algoa Bay setting offers a different base from the Summerstrand hotel cluster. Compare it if city and harbour access suit your plans and you are comfortable arranging transport for beachfront outings.

Do not confuse The Paxton Hotel at paxton.co.za with The Paxton Luxury Apartments, a different property. Ask the hotel about your room's outlook and the journeys you will make repeatedly.

Check The Paxton Hotel. I would not choose it on the assumption that it sits beside Shark Rock Pier.

Hacklewood Hill: choose Walmer deliberately

Hacklewood Hill Country House, at 152 Prospect Road, is the Walmer alternative on this list. Gardens, a pool and a country-house atmosphere are its appeal. It makes more sense for a quieter inland base and Walmer meals than for someone expecting the beach outside the front door.

Combine the location with a coffee stop at Mastertons or a reserved meal at Muse, allowing for transport between them. Compare room arrangements and any transfers directly with the property.

See Hacklewood Hill's accommodation and the food and coffee guide.

A stay from my own archive: Once Upon a Dome

My family and I stayed at Once Upon a Dome before the March 2024 feature. What made it worth writing about was the feeling of leaving town behind without turning the getaway into a long expedition. Our family of four enjoyed it, while the dome's setting also suited a romantic break.

That is a dated personal experience, not a fresh inspection of every facility. Read the original stay story and confirm the current unit, availability and facilities with the hosts before booking. I would treat it as a getaway in its own right, rather than assume it is the most convenient base for three busy city days.

If you are coming to race

Start with the current event venue and road-closure plan, then choose accommodation. A familiar hotel name is less useful than knowing whether you can reach registration, keep your normal breakfast routine and get home after the finish. Ask about early access, food storage and equipment before booking.

For a short first visit, my preference is one city base and a full day for Addo. The three-day itinerary shows how I would arrange that. Compare the total stay, including meals, parking, transport and cancellation terms; current rates belong on the property's own booking page.
