Give the Bay three days and I would use one for the beachfront, one for Addo and one for a slower choice between the coast and the city's stories. Stay in one place, book the few things that need booking and leave some air in the plan. You do not need to spend the holiday crossing town to collect attractions.
This is the version I would put in front of a friend visiting for the first time. The named stops have a purpose: a clear introduction to the Bay, a full wildlife day and time to see beyond the main hotel strip. It assumes a car or agreed transport. It is not a set of confirmed bookings or a claim that every venue opens every day.
Before you arrive: choose one base
For this itinerary, I would begin by comparing Summerstrand stays. The Beach Hotel suits a classic beachfront base; Boardwalk Hotel puts pools and the wider entertainment precinct nearby; Wilmot Cottages gives you a kitchenette and a smaller garden setting. Those are different kinds of stay, not interchangeable rooms.
If you choose Walmer, Hacklewood Hill is one named alternative, with the understanding that the coast will be a journey. The accommodation guide explains the trade-offs and links the properties directly.
Book an Addo tour or SANParks activity before fixing everything around it. If you are self-driving, decide which gate makes sense and read the park's current approach directions. Choose your arrival-day meal after checking the day of the week, not before.
Day one: get the feel of the Bay
Morning or arrival afternoon: Hobie and the pier
Start at Hobie Beach and Shark Rock Pier. Walk enough of the promenade to get your bearings, look back along the coast and let the journey here settle. For me, this is a better opening than an ambitious drive with luggage still in the car.
If you want to swim, make that decision using the day's conditions, warnings and lifeguard advice. The beach is still worth visiting when the sensible plan is a walk. See the beach guide for the different coastal settings.
Lunch: stay on the beachfront
Something Good Roadhouse on Marine Drive is the casual option I would compare here. Burgers, shakes, breakfast and takeaway choices fit a beach day without turning lunch into another excursion. Use its current menu and check arrangements for your group.
Leave the afternoon open for more promenade time, your accommodation or a nearby indoor option if the weather turns. Boardwalk tenants set their own hours, so pick a particular restaurant or activity rather than assume everything shares one timetable.
Evening: keep it simple, or reserve Muse
For an arrival day, eating near your base is enough. If you arrive early and want dinner to be the occasion, Muse at 182 Main Road, Walmer is the booked option on this itinerary. Check its seasonal menu and phone to confirm the reservation; older listings may still give the former Richmond Hill location.
I would not reserve a late, elaborate dinner before a very early safari departure. The food guide gives the reasons behind each named choice.
Day two: give Addo the whole day
Keep this day for Addo Elephant National Park. From a city base, Matyholweni near Colchester is a useful southern entrance for self-drive. SANParks guided drives leave from Addo Main Camp, a different destination. A collected city tour is another option if you do not want to drive.
Read the Addo guide before choosing your departure point. It includes dated conservation fees, the gate distinction and SANParks' advice about approaches. Do not let a navigation app substitute the R335 through Motherwell for the park's recommended route.
Inside, give yourself permission to stop. A wildlife day is not improved by a promise to cover every loop. Plan a permitted break for food and toilets, stay in the vehicle except where the park allows you out and work backwards from your exit deadline. Keep water, your documents and camera within reach before you start driving.
I would leave the evening loose: an easy meal near the hotel or a simple self-catering supper. Do not put a boat trip, a long drive west or a fixed evening performance after Addo and hope everything lines up.
Day three, option one: Sards and a Walmer coffee
Choose Sardinia Bay if the coast is what brought you here. Our original Sards story carries plenty of affection for this stretch of sand; the practical reason to give it a morning is the landscape and room to walk.
Check access and the weather, bring water and allow for dune walking. This is not the easiest choice for anyone who needs a flat route from the car. Keep the plan as a coastal outing rather than assume the sea will suit a swim.
Afterwards, make Walmer your next stop. Mastertons at 92 Main Road offers a coffee bar and a working-roastery setting. It currently closes on Sundays and public holidays, so use the actual calendar. Holiday Coffee is another connection to this site's early local stories; contact it for the day's address and hours.
I would choose one coastal outing, one coffee stop and a relaxed meal. Cape Recife can be an alternative to Sards, especially with a booked SANCCOB visit. It does not need to become an extra item squeezed between them.
Day three, option two: art, history and a New Brighton meal
If you want more of the city's stories, arrange a guided Donkin Reserve and Route 67 outing. A local guide can give the artworks and streets context that a quick photograph misses. Confirm the meeting point, route and transport in advance.
Then consider a reserved Café Riza meal at 7 Ntshekisa Road, New Brighton. Ask chef Vuyokazi Duze's restaurant about the menu and your group, and make the journey part of an agreed plan. Check Sunday operation directly because the venue's pages differ.
This is an alternative shape for the day, not an instruction to rush from a dune walk to a heritage route and then to lunch. Use our history and culture guide to plan a hosted visit with the time it deserves.
Change the order when the trip needs it
| Your situation | The adjustment I would make |
|---|---|
| A late arrival | Use day one for check-in, a short promenade outing and dinner nearby |
| A Sunday in Walmer | Check restaurant openings; do not build the morning around a closed Mastertons roastery |
| Young children | Shorten the first day and check safari activity age rules before paying |
| No rental car | Book a collected safari and agree the other return journeys in advance |
| A flight on day three | Keep the last outing near your base and allow a proper airport margin |
| Race weekend | Protect registration, rest and familiar meals; let companions choose their own outings |
For a sea-based wildlife trip, make a weather-dependent booking with a reputable operator and decide which city outing it replaces. Do not add it to Addo day. For another few nights, extend towards Jeffreys Bay and St Francis or use the seven-day Eastern Cape itinerary.
Three days will not show you the whole Eastern Cape. They can give you the Bay, a wildlife day and a reason to come back. That is enough of a plan to begin with.
