For runners and their people

Run the city.
Stay for the weekend.

A plan for visiting athletes, supporters and the Bay around the race. By Dean Cothill.

Run Your City: the first finish line
From the 2023 Run Your City archive. An earlier edition, rather than the next race’s route or start arrangements.

I run here, and I know an event weekend has two different versions. There is the athlete's version: registration, a familiar dinner, kit and an early start. Then there is everyone else's version: coffee, a place to watch, something for the children and a decent meal after the finish.

This is a plan for bringing those two weekends together. The Absa Run Your City Gqeberha 10K is the focus, with our five original 2023 and 2024 reports kept below. The next edition's date, entry status, collection venue and route must come from the organiser's current information. Older race reports are history, not this year's instructions.

Before booking: use the current event page

Begin with the official Gqeberha event page and its entry information. Check the edition date, what your entry includes, collection arrangements, road closures and the organiser's cancellation or transfer rules.

On 16 October 2026, the accessible organiser page still carried the already-past 1 March 2026 date alongside older text. This guide therefore does not advertise an unconfirmed next race date. Ask the organiser directly before paying for travel if the latest edition is not clearly identified.

Choose a stay around the actual race logistics

My starting comparison would be a Summerstrand base, then the route between that address and the current registration and start venues. The Beach Hotel and Boardwalk Hotel offer different hotel experiences; Wilmot Cottages is a smaller self-catering option. The stay guide explains why each makes the shortlist.

Ask about an early breakfast or food storage, entry outside reception hours and parking during road closures. If you are flying in, leave room for collection and travel delays. I would rather arrive with one quiet afternoon available than have the whole weekend depend on a perfectly timed flight.

The day before: get the necessary jobs done

Collect what the current event instructions require, check your start arrangements and keep the rest of the day manageable. A short beachfront wander can give visiting family a sense of the Bay without turning the afternoon into another endurance event.

I would keep dinner close to the accommodation and choose food that is familiar to the runner. Something Good offers a casual beachfront option; a self-catering supper may be simpler still. Leave the exploratory meal for after the race. The food guide has named alternatives for the rest of the group.

Race morning: give supporters a separate plan

Agree where to meet after the finish and how you will contact one another. Download the current spectator and road-closure information before leaving; an old route map does not establish access for the next edition.

Supporters do not need to spend the entire morning following an athlete's timetable. Choose a confirmed viewing point, then a nearby coffee or meal that can be reached with the current closures. Keep children supervised and use the organiser's designated crossing points. Do not assume a café will open early just because a race is happening.

After the finish: make room for the people who came with you

A meal together is a good starting point. For a quieter booked evening, compare Muse's current menu and confirm the Walmer reservation by phone. For a more casual group, stay near the beachfront and choose around the table's actual needs.

If you have another day, use it for a proper outing. Hobie and the promenade suit a lighter day; Sardinia Bay is a landscape outing with dune walking to consider. A guided city visit or a booked Café Riza meal offers another version of the Bay. Our three-day itinerary gives those choices some geography.

Addo is worth a full day of its own. Choose it when the group wants that drive and has time to enjoy it, rather than making it an obligation immediately after racing. See the Addo day guide.

Coming for triathlon instead?

Use the current event name and edition. IRONMAN South Africa's official event links now distinguish IRONMAN 70.3 Nelson Mandela Bay from the full-distance African Championship in Mossel Bay. Our 2023 Ironman article records a past Gqeberha event; it is not the next edition's travel brief.

Start with the official South Africa event links and the Nelson Mandela Bay event page. Check the current athlete guide, distances, venue and date before choosing flights or accommodation. This page does not reproduce an unverified next-edition schedule.

For an open-water swim event, use the named organiser's current instructions. An attractive beach photograph, a training route and an organised swim are three different planning decisions.

How to use the original race reports

The five reports below show the first editions, athletes, atmosphere and results. Their original words and publication dates are retained. Entry prices, start times, routes and promotional offers in those reports belong to their named editions. Follow the current organiser links above for a new booking.

Their presence promises to elevate the competition and bring international flair to the friendly city of Gqeberha.

Mashele Aims to Break His Own Record

Precious Mashele, who made headlines with his remarkable performance at the inaugural event in 2023, setting a national record of 27:35 and securing second place, has confirmed his return in 2024. Mashele, a multiple SA Champion, is not just looking to compete; he is targeting his own record with the aim to outdo his previous performance. The Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series: A Pillar in Mashele’s Season

Beyond his aspirations for the Gqeberha race, Mashele is set to represent South Africa in the 5000m at the upcoming African Games in Ghana. He views the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series, consisting of five events, as an integral part of his 2024 season preparation. Mashele extends his gratitude to Stillwater Sports, the organizers of the series, for the opportunity to compete at such a high level, emphasizing the series’ role in helping athletes achieve fast times and personal bests.

Run Your City: the first finish line

The Inaugural Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K a SUPER SUCCESS

Original report, published 2 April 2023. The following information is historical.

The Inaugural Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K: 2023

The inaugural Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQBERHA 10K that took place in ‘The Friendly City” today (Sunday 02 April 2023) could not have asked for a better debut as near perfect conditions greeted the 3000 plus runners, with the elites taking full advantage of the opportunity to run some spectacular times.

Kenya’s Daniel Ebenyo is making it a habit to win in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series after consecutive wins in Cape Town in 2021 and 2022. True to form, the Kenyan opened a gap from the gun and was never headed. His aggressive front running style has seen him set some scintillating times in his career (26:58 PB) and today was no different. By 2km the Kenyan had dropped the rest of a very deep field that included the likes of Uganda’s Isaac Kibet (27:41 PB) and Kenya’s Asbel Rutto (27:55) as well as South Africa’s SA 10km and Half Marathon Record Holder, Stephen Mokoka and multiple SA 10km Champion, Precious Mashele.

5km came and went in 13:11 for an average speed of 2:39/km. That early pace cost him as he slowed down for an average 2:45/km in the second half. Nevertheless, that meant he had opened a gap of 20sec over the chasing duo of Precious Mashele and Thabang Mosiako who were having the run of their lives, going through halfway in 13:31 (average speed of 2:43/km).

Ebenyo was chasing the SA Allcomers Record of 27:16 run by Joshua Cheptegei in 2018 but had to settle for his best time on South African soil, crossing the line in 27:23.

“I’m not happy with my time. I wanted a Personal Best. But it is early in the year, so I still have some work to do,” said Ebenyo.

Behind him Precious Mashele was having the race of his life as he flew across the line in 27:35 to break the 8-year-old SA Record of Stephen Mokoka who ran 27:38 in 2015. Mashele dragged Thabang Mosiako to a massive personal best of 27:52, setting a new Eastern Province Record.

Mashele’s previous best time was 28:11 run in 2022, while Mosiako took a whopping 34sec off his previous best of 28:26.

“I knew I was in shape after the World Cross Country Championships (Mashele equalled his best performance by finishing 16th), so I wanted to chase the SA Record,” said Mashele. “I know I have gone to another level now, so I am excited about what is to come, especially in the rest of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series in 2023”.

Mosiako broke the 24-year-old provincial record of Abner Chipu (28:13 – 1999) with his 27:52.

Mashele and Mosiako breaking 28minutes means that South Africa now boast four athletes who have dipped under the 28min mark in the last 8 year. Mashele, Mosiako and Maxime Chaumeton (27:58 – 2022 Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K) are part of a new generation who are taking the sport into a new era. They are also the only three who have run under 28min on South African soil, Mokoka having set the former SA Record in Manchester in 2015.

Diana Chesang who finished second at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K in 2022, running 31:55, was expected to dominate the women’s race, but a niggly knee meant she had to give way to the hard running Fridah Ndinda who set the pace from the front. Ndinda went through 5km in 15:09, with Bekelech Teku Wariyo (Ethiopia) and Docus Ajok (Uganda) crossing the halfway mark some 30sec later (15:39). Also in that group were South Africa’s Glenrose Xaba and Lesotho’s Neheng Khatala.

Ndinda’s early pace cost her in the second half as she was passed Bekelech Teku Wariyo in the final kilometer, the Ethiopian winning in 31:36 with Ndinda coming in second (31:41). Uganda’s Docus Ajok rounded out the podium (32:15).

Glenrose Xaba smashed her personal best by almost 30seconds as she settled for fourth, clocking 32:23 (previous PB 32:45).

“I am so happy,” said Xaba. “I am back in 2018 shape now.” Xaba was unstoppable in South Africa in 2018. She battled with injury and form for a few years but has clearly shown she is back to her best.

“Well done to everyone who participated in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K and joined Team Absa Walk Run on Strava. A huge congratulations to all the winners. It was inspiring to see so many people come together to push themselves to achieve their goals,” said Sydney Mbhele, Absa’s Group Chief Marketing and Corporate Affairs Officer.

“I’d like to commend the community of Gqeberha for allowing us into their beautiful city. We believe in the power of a united community and what can be achieved when we are working towards a common goal. Their support and commitment is a true display of what our campaign, Together we can do more, Siyabangena stands for. Their determination and dedication to pushing the limits are truly inspiring.

Thank you to all the volunteers, partner sponsors and organisers who made this event possible. We can’t wait to come back next year.”

“Gqeberha residents had a firsthand experience today of how world class achievements and fun for all participants go hand in hand at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. “

“Today we were treated to a fantastic start to the series,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. “Congratulations to Daniel Ebenyo and Bekelech Teku Wariyo for putting on world class performances. You have set the bar for the remaining four cities in the series. Thank you to each and every runner and walker, our sponsors and partners, Easter Province Athletics and Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, for the invaluable role that you played in hosting the inaugural Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K. We can’t wait to return to the friendly city, or to quote Bassie Kamana (Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality MMC: Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture), ‘The City of Action’ in 2024.”

Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series GQEBERHA

“Gqeberha is a fresh and exciting addition to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series,” said Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Series. “Runners will be treated to a fantastic on route experience that highlights iconic city landmarks, includes magnificent views, and features lively performances from some of the city’s leading performing arts groups. We will also get to witness a world class elite race on home soil. This is fantastic both for the athletes and spectators alike. Together with the City, EPA, Title Sponsor, Absa and key sponsors such as PUMA, DHL, Chery, Garmin and Woolworths to mention just a few, we can’t wait to celebrate the event’s debut on Sunday.”

As has come to be expected in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series at the coast, the route is a fast one and with the line up assembled, running fans can expect nothing short of yet another world class performance.

Back is Kenya’s Daniel Simiu Ebenyo, the Commonwealth Games 10 000m silver medallist. Ebenyo is no stranger to the Series after winning the then Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 12K in 2021 and the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K in 2022, the latter in a blistering 27:34. The Kenyan boasts a 10km best time of 26:58 run in Valencia in 2022. He is in the mood for a fast time.

“A world leading time would be great,” said Ebenyo. Should he set a new world leading time then it will eclipse the 26:33 run by Berihu Aregawi. That time is also the second fastest ever run behind the world record of Rhonex Kipruto (26:24 – 2020) and will firmly place the race and the series on the global map.

Joining him will be Uganda’s Isaac Kibet who boasts a 27:41 10km best time and has run 28:03 at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K in 2022. Ebenyo’s training partner, Asbel Rutto who ran 27:55 in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K in 2022 is looking to go better this time round. The trio will face South Africa’s finest in Elroy Gelant (SA 5000m record holder), Precious Mashele, Stephen Mokoka (SA 10km and Half Marathon record holder) and local favourite, Melikhaya Frans.

“I will go with the front bunch,” said Frans. “I’ve trained hard and am in good shape and want to give the home crowd a good showing”.

“I’m in better shape than I have been for a long time,” says Elroy Gelant. “With the international competition and the likes of Stephen, Precious and Meli (Melikhaya Frans), we know this will be a fast race. I am excited.”

“You always know that the race will be fast in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series,” says Stephen Mokoka. “It is why we always come back. I will as always run to challenge the front guys.”

“I want to run a low 28min or faster,” says Precious Mashele. “With these guys we know it will be fast and, on the cards,”.

The women’s race will be no less exciting. Lesotho’s multiple National Record Holder, Neheng Khatala has confirmed that she’ll be taking part in the entire series and is looking to start the series with a bang.

“The Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series always brings fast athletes and that helps to push me to run better, so I am excited to race in Gqeberha on 2 April,” says Khatala who boasts a best of 32:06 for the 10k. She could well dip under the 32min mark come 2 April. She will line up against Kenya’s Diana Chesang who ran 31:55 at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K in 2022.

Newly crowned SA 10 000m champion, Glenrose Xaba will also toe the line in the hopes of further closing the gap on the international women. “I am looking forward to running a good time,” said Xaba who boasts a 10km best of 32:45.

With such a spectacular line up, the inaugural Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K is bound to deliver fireworks and the thousands who have entered will also be treated to a running experience second to none with numerous entertainment and vibe points along the 10km route.

Giving back to the community

The organisers of South Africa’s award-winning road running series, the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series are excited to welcome Reach For A Dream Gqeberha and Garden Region and the Animal Anti-Cruelty League Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha as the official charities of the inaugural Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K that will take place on Sunday 02 April 2023.

Reach For A Dream Foundation

“Since the inception of the first event in Cape Town in 2015, Charity support has always been an important element of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. “We are extremely excited to celebrate the Series’ debut in Gqeberha in April and are proud to be able to support two local charities that do fantastic work in the community. We invite runners and walkers to join in on the fun, #RunYourCity and help make a difference.”

Established in 1988, Reach For A Dream seeks to inspire hope and help children to believe in the power of dreams.

“It is an honour to be included in Gqeberha’s first Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series race,” says Michelle van Huyssteen, Reach For A Dream Foundation Spokesperson. “Reach For A Dream celebrates its 35th birthday this year and we are excited that we will be able to inspire more children, fighting life-threatening illnesses, on their journeys of hope by fulfilling their dreams with the proceeds received from runners participating in the event. When someone supports Reach For A Dream, they become a Dream Maker and a partner in manifesting hope in children. When taking on the 10km run, remember the incredible bravery of children facing life-threatening illnesses. We look forward to absorbing the energy and excitement of the inaugural Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K and can’t wait to encourage participants and cheer them on as they make their way to the finish line.”

Animal Anti-Cruelty League Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha

Photograph from Gqeberha joins Run Your City

The Animal Anti-Cruelty League Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha (AACL) provides assistance to indigent communities, including informal settlements, residing in the northern areas of Nelson Mandela Bay. The AACL’s presence and the assistance they provide on a daily basis has brought both relief and upliftment to these communities and their pets.

“It is such an honour to be chosen as an official charity of the inaugural Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K,” says Linda-Louise Swain, AACL Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha PR & Outreach Coordinator. “It is a gift of gold to be offered this incredible opportunity to raise funds. Our message to runners is that the goalpost is yours for the winning!  Know that every step will be making a difference to those who cannot speak for themselves. We look forward to experiencing the camaraderie amongst runners and walkers while enjoying the amazing opportunity to promote our cause.”
